What makes a 4 cylinder honda S2000 so powerfull and fast?

What makes a 4 cylinder honda S2000 so powerfull and fast, i tried searching and failed.. lol
this 4cyl car can even beat some V6's out there and can hold its own against others too
what is it that makes it get so much horsepower from only 4 cylinders ?
i dont think i worded this question as i wanted but hope someone can explain.

it just has a lot of hp. 4 cylinders can handle plenty of horses. its a vtec motor so it revs 9k rpm. its a light motor in a light car with a lot of hp.
